Oil power transformers

Power transformers are used to receive, transform and distribute electric current energy. During operation, the active part of the transformer heats up. Therefore, the device is equipped with a cooling system. The working part is cooled by air ventilation, oil or other insulating liquids. Devices with oil cooling are called oil power transformers of the TM type.

Transformer characteristics: 

  • are used for energy-intensive consumers in large cities and large enterprises; 
    have compact dimensions;
  • tolerate overloads well during short circuits;
  • transformer models are produced for specific conditions (low-noise, earthquake-resistant, economical transformers);
    they can withstand high and low temperatures (from + 40 to -60 °C);
  • have a small surface area that can cause electric shock, compared to dry transformers.

To ensure that the oil transformer operates properly, install it in a chemically neutral environment away from open fire and explosive substances. And monitor the level and quality of oil in the tank.

Construction of oil transformer

As in any power transformer, the working part of the TM transformer consists of a magnetic circuit and windings. The oil tank is what distinguishes an oil transformer from a dry one. Oil is both a cooling liquid and an insulator.

There is a sleeve in the oil tank cap. A thermometer is installed in it. With its help, you control the temperature of the upper layer of oil.

In addition to the active part, the transformer has high and low voltage inputs/outputs, switches, and insulators. All equipment is placed in a special protective casing.

Powerful transformers from 160 kVA are equipped with rollers, which facilitate their installation.

Types of oil-cooled transformers
According to power and voltage, transformers are divided into eight sizes:

I – up to 100 kVA/up to 35 kV;

II – 100 - 1000 kVA/ up to 35 kV;

III – 1000 - 6300 kVA/ up to 35 kV;

IV – from 6300 kVA/ to 35 kV;

V – up to 32000 kVA/ 35 - 110 kV;

VI – 32000 - 80000 kVA/ up to 330 kV;
